With advancing technology in instrument and column design, there is a strong requirement to engineer a universal detector for modern high performance liquid chromatography. The detector performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, qualitative content, throughput and other criteria clearly indicate the need for future improvisations and development leading to universal detection system in HPLC. This article communicates the recent trends and progress made in development of detectors with special reference to aerosol detectors claiming their place in universal detection.

Combining Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry with Gas Chromatography for Increased Sensitivity in Beer Analysis

Beer is derived from natural plant products, mainly cereal grains such as barley, rice, wheat and corn. Beer samples are very complex and contain many hundreds of organic components including vitamins, amino acids, proteins and bitter acids. The ‘signature’ fl avour and aroma of each particular beer brand is characterized by a vast array of volatile compounds, which often have very low olfactory thresholds. This means that the actual concentrations of signature compounds can be extremely low, posing significant analytical challenges. In addition, some compounds may exist at very high concentrations. As a result, beer samples can be very difficult to analyse.


Determination of Aflatoxins in Food by LC-MS/MS

Aflatoxins (AFs) are among the most carcinogenic substances known. Crops which are frequently affected include cereals, oilseeds, spices and tree nuts. Accurate determination of AFs is required to avoid human disease from AF exposure and to advance worldwide surveillance of food. Analysis of AFs in food products is routinely performed by thin-layer chromatography and liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection in combination with both precolumn and postcolumn derivatization. The LC/MS/MS method for aflatoxins was suitable for the determination of four aflatoxins in cereal and corn extract because of its high sensitivity and high selectivity.

 
Overcoming Challenges in Carbohydrate Separations

Carbohydrates are the most abundant class of organic compounds found in nature. They play essential roles in many biological processes such as providing storage and transport of energy. Carbohydrates provide structure for plants and animals. They are ubiquitous in our daily lives: from the food we eat, to the wood we use to build our houses, to the cotton we use for our clothing. The analysis of sugars and other carbohydrates has always been plagued with difficulties. In this article we discuss the issues and show new solutions to these old problems.
