Inconsistent column packing and fragmented resin procurement are persistent obstacles when scaling biologics manufacturing from development into commercial production. Bio-Rad Laboratories has extended its Foresight Pro prepacked chromatography columns to include a range packed with Nuvia ion exchange and mixed-mode resins for process-scale downstream chromatography. Each column ships good manufacturing practice (GMP)-ready, reducing the qualification and regulatory documentation burden for biopharma process teams.

How Single-Lot Packing Addresses Resin Batch Variability In Prepacked Chromatography Columns

Resin batch variability creates a bottleneck in process-scale purification when multiple resin lots are blended during column packing, producing batch-to-batch inconsistency that complicates process validation and column qualification. Diab Elmashni, Director of Process Chromatography Business at Bio-Rad Laboratories, explains: "What sets these columns apart is that each one is packed using media from a single production lot, instead of blending multiple resin batches together during packing."

Single-lot packing gives each column a traceable resin provenance, which process validation dossiers require and which multi-batch blending makes difficult to establish. Resin batch consistency directly affects product yield, regulatory continuity, and process robustness; those pressures intensify as upstream titers rise through perfusion and high-density fed-batch processes. The qualification burden those titer increases place on downstream purification in biomanufacturing is compounded by ICH Q7, the internationally harmonized GMP standard for biologically derived active pharmaceutical ingredients adopted across FDA, EMA, and WHO jurisdictions.

Bio-Rad manufactures all Foresight Pro columns in an ISO Class 7 cleanroom and ships each unit with performance data covering asymmetry, height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP), endotoxin, and bioburden. Wetted components meet United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Class VI requirements under USP <88>; standard Tri-Clamp connections integrate directly with existing chromatography skids. Selecting the right resin chemistry for each polishing step is central to advanced chromatography resins and scale-up, where mixed-mode selectivity becomes particularly important as purification sequences move from bench to GMP-compliant production.

Which Biopharmaceutical Purification Workflows Do The Foresight Pro Nuvia Columns Serve?

The Foresight Pro Nuvia columns target the ion exchange, cation exchange, and mixed-mode polishing steps used to purify monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and vaccines, where these chromatography modes clear host cell proteins, aggregates, and process-related impurities. Nuvia cPrime and Nuvia aPrime 4A extend coverage to separations where single-mechanism resins fail to resolve structurally complex biologics from co-eluting impurities.

Diab Elmashni notes: "The new Nuvia prepacked Foresight Pro chromatography columns build on the strong market response to our original CHT Ceramic Hydroxyapatite Media columns, which launched in 2022. Customers asked us for column options built around different resins, and this line is our response." The Foresight Pro CHT Ceramic Hydroxyapatite Media columns remain available alongside the new Nuvia range.

Bio-Rad's Foresight Pro Nuvia range covers five resin chemistries across three chromatography interaction classes.

ResinMode
Nuvia Q MediaStrong anion exchange (AEX)
Nuvia HP-Q MediaStrong AEX for large biomolecules
Nuvia HR-S MediaStrong cation exchange (CEX)
Nuvia cPrime MediaWeak CEX-hydrophobic interaction (CEX-HIC)
Nuvia aPrime 4A MediaStrong AEX-hydrophobic interaction (AEX-HIC)

Foresight Pro Nuvia columns ship in internal diameters (ID) of 5 to 13 cm with bed heights of 10 or 20 cm. Columns from 20 to 45 cm ID are in development, with availability expected in early 2027. Bio-Rad supplies the resin, packs the column, and provides technical support as a single source for the full Foresight Pro range.

Bio-Rad Foresight Pro Nuvia: GMP-Ready Prepacked Chromatography Columns For Downstream Biologics Purification

Bio-Rad's extension of the Foresight Pro range addresses a defined gap in process-scale downstream chromatography: the batch-to-batch variability that multi-lot column packing introduces into process validation and regulatory documentation. Five Nuvia resin chemistries spanning strong and weak ion exchange, cation exchange, and mixed-mode interactions cover the polishing workflows applied to monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and vaccines across the drug development continuum. Manufactured in an ISO Class 7 cleanroom and shipped GMP-ready, the columns are designed to reduce qualification burden for biopharma teams operating under ICH Q7 and USP requirements.
