Bio-Rad Laboratories has received MicroVal approval for its EZ-Check Listeria spp. and EZ-Check Listeria monocytogenes Kits for the detection of Listeria spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in food products and environmental samples.

MicroVal, an international certification organization for the validation and approval of alternative methods for microbiological analysis of food and beverages, certified the methods under certificates 2025LR135 and 2025LR136. Bio-Rad reports that the certification confirms equivalence between the Bio-Rad method and the reference method according to ISO 16140-2 standards.

Listeria are gram-positive bacteria found primarily in soil, water, and animal products. They can cause listeriosis, which creates food safety risks for consumers and can lead to recalls and reputational harm for food producers.

“Listeriosis poses a significant threat to pregnant women, children, and those with weakened immune systems,” remarks Franck Edouard, Senior Marketing Director, Food Science Division, Bio-Rad Laboratories.

Bio-Rad’s EZ-Check Listeria spp. and EZ-Check Listeria monocytogenes Kits use multiplex amplification of the target pathogen and an internal control to monitor for false negatives. The kits also feature a proprietary, patented duplex detection system designed to enhance accuracy and simplify result interpretation.

“Our EZ-Check Listeria spp. and EZ-Check Listeria monocytogenes Kits offer fast, dependable, accurate detection of these organisms which is essential to maintaining rigorous food safety standards and ensuring the safety of the public,” said Edouard. “MicroVal approval of both EZ-Check kits, in addition to the previous AOAC validation, further solidifies Bio-Rad’s position as a trusted leader in food safety innovation, delivering effective solutions for pathogen detection in food and environmental samples.”

Bio-Rad also reports AOAC validation for both kits in food and environmental samples. The EZ-Check Listeria spp. Kit carries AOAC certificate number 012604, while the EZ-Check Listeria monocytogenes Kit carries certificate number 012605.
