Expect the Unexpected – Climate Change and Emerging Mycotoxins in Cereals and Toddler Foods

Available On-Demand

Explore a study that developed a highly sensitive LC-MS/MS method to detect multiple regulated and emerging mycotoxins in global cereals

By viewing this presentation, you will:

  • Gain knowledge in the presence of emerging mycotoxins
  • Learn capabilities of the mass spectrometer that was used compared to older models.

Event Overview

In this study, a method was developed using a high-end LC-MS/MS system to quantify multiple mycotoxins in cereals and food products at lower limits of detection. This is important because mycotoxin regulations have been lowered in some countries and regions. Climate change over the past several years has shown a change in growing conditions resulting in common mycotoxins appearing in uncommon areas. In addition, novel mycotoxins not routinely monitored have emerged, necessitating the expansion of the analyte panel. The method was applied to the analysis of various globally sourced toddler snacks.

Results from this study revealed various emerging mycotoxins present. Enniatins and Beauvericin were the most common of these. The enhanced sensitivity of the high-end mass spectrometer allowed lower reporting limits than previous studies, which resulted in more mycotoxins present.
